About Quick Fillet Tool

Quick Fillet Tools, LLC is a Michigan based company new to the fishing industry with many inspired innovations bringing ease to the Angler's need for cutlery. The company was established in the fall of 2009 after a fishing experience that would changes lives. Hi, my name is Mark Tanski, founder of Quick Fillet Tools, LLC and this is no fish story... It's Inspired!

For many years a group of high school buddies of mine would gather for an annual fishing trip to battle the Monsters of Northern Michigan, "The King Salmon". Many times I was invited to attend these trips and many times I found an excuse not to go, the biggest one was.... I don't fish! After my marriage to Terri, who by the way is an avid Fishing Legend in her own rite, I found myself entering the waters of the Betsie River near Frankfort, Michigan for the first time in the fall of 2008.

Within seconds, yes seconds, of my arrival to the treasured "Honey Hole", I found myself hooked into a King Salmon. I need to remind you this was my first fishing trip, my first time with a fly rod, my first time in a river with waders on and my first time tied into any fish larger than a fillet on my dinner plate. I was now battling a leaping, tugging, fighting monster King Salmon. The battle of a lifetime, excitement shared by all and 7 minutes later, a beautiful 18 pound Male King Salmon was landed. For those of you who fish, enough said... I was HOOKED!

The next year followed with many more fishing trips and many more fish. The only problem I had now was filleting fish; I was not good at it at all. In fact, I resorted to paying to have them filleted at the local cleaning station. I know, a little wimpy, but I was wasting too much meat. After watching several different fishermen fillet their catch... and mine... I was most impressed with the speed and ability of Harold, a local resident with a mean knife and fast hands. Harold could fillet fish faster than I could load them on the table. His success seemed to stem from a plank with a 4" spike in it. The man is a filleting machine!

After the second weekend of watching him fillet my catch... and $40... it was quite clear I need to learn how to do this myself. I was confident in the technique but I needed a board with a nail. Once I returned home I was off to my workshop to build one like Harold's but with all the gear I already had I didn't want to lug another piece around, especially one with a 4" nail sticking out of it. In my mind that had disaster written all over it. I envisioned the truck seat tearing before my eyes. I already had a great fillet board, I didn't want to pound a nail through it. So, I figured what I needed to make was a portable and adjustable rig. Minutes later the Quick Fillet Tool was born. 

With tool in hand, Terri, I and the kids set off the following weekend to catch fish and get filleting! After a successful day of fishing we gave the tool a try and the next thing you know I was a filleting machine too. The tool worked great! It was apparent to me the trick came in holding the catch steady in order to control the knife and the tool did this effortlessly. The rest is history.
